What if my health insurance doesn't cover chiropractic?
Your health affects everything you do and everyone you know. It is your most valuable possession. Yet, each of us is free to place a different value on our health. It's convenient when an insurance company or third party helps pay the bill for you to see a chiropractor, but be careful. Don't allow the profit motive of a huge corporation make the decision for you. Find out how we make chiropractic affordable for just about everyone at Madison Upper Cervical Center. Please contact Madison's NUCCA chiropractor, Dr. Valeri Briski, at 608-443-1800 for more answers to your questions.
I've been to a chiropractor before, what is different?
Upper cervical care is different from traditional chiropractic in several ways. What most people find is the biggest difference is there is no popping, cracking, twisting, or forceful adjustment of the spine. The actual adjustment feels like a tickle behind the ear. Another difference is that every patient has their own specific adjustment calculated for their individual misalignment. To determine the correction, specific images are taken of the spine. We also take two post-adjustment pictures to make sure we achieved the best adjustment possible. We deal with a very small misalignment of the first bon in the neck (C1, atlas) that surrounds the lower part of the brainstem. Your brainstem is one of the highest control centers of the body. Pressure on the brainstem can cause many different health conditions that most people wouldn't necessarily relate to the spine. Another benefit of NUCCA is that long term spinal balance is maintained, which produces improved overall health and well-being. All spinal practitioners agree that spinal care is important for good health because of the close relationship between your nervous system and the spine.
Can Upper Cervical Chiropractic benefit children?
Absolutely! One of the biggest traumas we go through in our lives is being born, especially if forceps, vacuum, or caesarian section is used. 60% of children are misaligned via the birth process or shortly thereafter. Colic, indigestion, sleeping and latching problems can all be due to atlas misalignments. We believe all children should be checked for atlas subluxation to make sure they can lead happy, healthy lives!
I was told not to see a chiropractor. Who should I listen to?
There are many people that have been told to not see a chiropractor from friends, family, medical doctors, dentists, etc. Often this doesn't have any basis other than personal preference or mis-information. It can also be because of prior injuries or surgeries. Remember, at Madison Upper Cervical Center, Dr. Briski uses a very gentle technique without any popping, cracking, or twisting. Dr. Briski always performs a detailed examination to determine if you are a candidate for upper cervical chiropractic care and to determine if there are any risks.
My neck feels fine. Can you help with anything else?
Everything in your body is connected and controlled by brain and nerve messages so they are all connected. Your postural muscles are constantly working to maintain an upright posture. Postural distortion results in uneven weight distribution over all your joint surfaces. The muscles of your neck, back, arms and legs will compensate for this shift in weight. Pain shows up in the area of greatest breakdown. The reduction of postural distortion provided by the NUCCA procedure decreases the stress on all areas of the body and allows for the relief of pain and proper healing. Do I get adjusted every time I come in?
Your spine is only adjusted with the objective findings indicate you are subluxated. How often you receive an adjustment is directly related to your body’s ability to maintain your alignment. Our goal at Madison Upper Cervical Center is to adjust you as few times as possible, however, Dr. Briski will recommend assessments based upon your body’s response to assure progress isn’t lost along the way.
Once I go to the chiropractor, I have to go for the rest of my life, right?
This is a common misconception. A possibility for this mindset may be due to the fact that the healing process takes time and multiple visits to the chiropractor may be needed to stabilize the spine until the body knows how to hold the vertebrae in an aligned position on its own. The longer the spine has been degenerating or breaking down (which is usually much earlier than the initial onset of symptoms), the longer it will typically take to attain a stabilized state. Dr. Briski promotes preventative care to help her patients avoid pain, disease and degeneration. After helping patients get out of the acute phase, she may recommend that patients return for periodic check-ups. This is equivalent to a dentist recommending check0ups to prevent cavities and gum disease and to head off any problems when they begin.
Can I go back into alignment on my own?
No. A subluxation will not realign on its own and you cannot adjust yourself. Many times patients feel as though they were out of alignment and there were able to regain alignment on their own. A true subluxation can only be corrected by a third party. That the patient most likely felt was the adaptation of the body to stress they were able to manage without assistance. Our goal is to manage the body in a state of reduced stress so the body can adapt to these stresses and strains without breaking down
